How to keep a motorcycle service log
A clear service entry connects completed work with a date and a known reading. Use the same structure for each job, and keep a separate log for every motorcycle.
Download rideXWhat belongs in an entry?
Record the motorcycle, date, distance or engine-hour reading, completed work, parts and cost. Add a part reference or product specification when known. Keep the relevant invoice or receipt alongside your own records.
A sample entry
Example only: oil and filter replaced, the date of the job, the known meter reading, the product specification from the manual and separate parts and labour costs. Describe what was completed rather than copying a planned task into the history.
How to handle missing information
An invoice date does not establish the motorcycle's reading on that day. Leave unknown information as unknown. Avoid entering zero or an estimate that could later be mistaken for a confirmed reading.
Use a log and reminders together
After completing work, save the entry and use the correct interval from the motorcycle manual to plan the next job. Update readings after riding. Your personal history supports planning but does not independently verify repairs or mileage.
Service-entry checklist
- Motorcycle, model year and date of work.
- Known distance and/or engine-hour reading.
- Work completed and parts or product references.
- Parts and labour costs, where known.
- Next service threshold from the correct manual.
